Entrevista a Wilmer Urrelo Zárate (La Paz, 1975)
Háblame un poco de los últimos libros que has publicado.
La novela más reciente se titula “Hablar con los perros”. Es una novela larga, algo compleja, la cual narra la vida de cinco personajes pero bajo un punto común: la búsqueda de la felicidad. Para uno esa felicidad será el amor, para otro el dinero, para otro la venganza. Todo ello bajo un solo enfoque: el canibalismo y la guerra del Chaco, ese conflicto bélico que sostuvieron Bolivia y Paraguay de 1932 a 1935.
Tell me about the latest books you have published.
My most recent novel is “Hablar con los perros.” It’s a long novel, rather complex, and it’s about the lives of five characters who have one thing in common: their search for happiness. For one, happiness will be love; for another, money; and for a third, vengeance. It all focuses on cannibalism and the Chaco War, that armed conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay from 1932 to 1935.

¿Qué blogs, revistas electrónicas u otros sitios en internet recomendarías para descubrir a autores noveles hispanohablantes?
No sé. Es difícil recomendar algo pues en la gran mayoría de los blogs hay una especie de sesgo, ¿no? Me refiero a que no son tan democráticos como se jactan por estar en la Red. Se parecen mucho nomás a los espacios culturales de los periódicos que tanto se criticaban por crear esos odiosos círculos literarios. Pero igual y no soy muy fanático de navegar en Internet, la verdad, así que no se me ocurre recomendar algún sitio.
What blogs, electronic magazines or other Web places would you recommend for discovering new Spanish-speaking writers?
I don’t know. It’s difficult to recommend one when most blogs have a certain bias, right? I mean, they are not as democratic as they claim by just being on the Web. They are very similar to the cultural sections in newspapers that were so criticized for creating those loathsome literary circles. Just the same, honestly, I am not very keen on surfing the Web so I can’t come up with any sites to recommend.
¿Cuáles son tus referentes en la literatura iberoamericana?
El boom, sin duda. Todo el boom (incluir a Leñero, a Andrés Rivera, a Mario Levrero, por favor; y a todos los que por una razón u otra estuvieron fuera de él). También leo con interés a Pío Baroja, por ejemplo. O a Jorge Edwards Bello. Eça de Queiroz también me gusta mucho. Lobo Antunes es fascinante.
Who are your major influences in Ibero-American literature?
The Boom Movement, no doubt. All of it (Leñero, Andrés Rivera and Mario Levrero should be included, please; and all those who for one reason or another have been excluded). I also read Pio Barojo with interest, for example. Or Jorge Edwards Bello. I also like Eça de Queiroz very much and find Lobo Antunes fascinating.
¿Qué otros escritores han tenido influencia en tu obra?
José María Arguedas, de lejos. Vargas Llosa, de más lejos. Victor Hugo. Thomas Mann. Últimamente leo con interés a Yukio Mishima y cada vez que termino un capítulo de “Caballos desbocados” me digo: “ojalá que de grande pueda escribir como este joven”.
What other writers have influenced your work?
José María Arguedas, from afar. Vargas Llosa, from even further away. Victor Hugo. Thomas Mann. Lately, I read Yukio Mishima with great interest and every time I finish a chapter of “Runaway Horses” I say to myself: “I hope when I grow up I can write like this young man.”
¿Qué nuevos autores hispanohablantes recomendarías?
Uf, mira, seguro olvidaré a más de uno. Me gusta mucho Yuri Herrera, Karla Suárez, Wendy Guerra, Junot Díaz, Sebastián Antezana es fenomenal para reinventarse. El Carlos Yushimito. Zambra, ¿por qué no?
What new Spanish-speaking authors would you recommend?
Well, listen, I will probably forget more than one. I like very much Yuri Herrera, Karla Suárez, Wendy Guerra and Junot Díaz. Sebastián Antezana is fabulous to reinvent oneself. Carlos Yushimito. Zambra, why not?
¿En qué estás trabajando ahora?
En nada. Escribir “Hablar con los perros” me costó mucho; casi termino en el cementerio por culpa de esa novela, así, con todas sus letras. De manera que prefiero unas vacaciones de un par de años antes de empezar a escribir de nuevo.
What are you working on now?
On nothing. Writing “Hablar con los perros” was very hard for me; I almost ended in the cemetery because of that novel; just like that, with all of its words. That’s why I prefer a two year break before I start writing something new.
¿Cómo te gustaría que fueran las bibliotecas del futuro?
Pues que tenga de todo para leer. Que estén prohidos los celulares y el ingreso de los críticos de cine. Ah, que puedas ir con tu perrito si lo tienes. Que tengan vitrales de colores fuertes y sillas cómodas con esos almohadones antihemorroides (eso es muy doloroso, te lo digo por experiencia). También que cuenten con estufas para el frío y esas lámparas verdes de mesa. Lo último es mi sueño erótico.
How would you like future libraries to be?
Well, that they have all sorts of materials to read. That cellular phones be banned along with film critics. Oh, that you can bring your dog if you have one. That they have stained-glass windows of intense colors and comfortable chairs with those cushions that do not cause hemorrhoids (they are very painful, I know from experience). They should also have heaters and those green table lamps. The last are like a wet dream for me
